Project
Description: Tim Curtis will lead a
group of colleagues in building a giant Crusader style
sandcastle during the project. The sandcastle, constructed with the
aid of sandbags will incorporating safety features to prevent
collapse, will have two meter high turrets and parapets younger
participants will be able to walk.
Background
Theme: There are two themes to this
work; the first explores the defence mechanisms we exert on our
sense of nationality, culture, our ideals and local ‘narrative’.
There are many important ideals and beliefs we hold that are rightly
worth defending and promoting but the fragile nature of this process
is echoed in the fragile nature of the sandcastle against the
ever-present oncoming tides. We need to continually reinforce the
sandcastle, not to exclude the ‘other’ which can help to strengthen
the structure but to continue to underpin and promote those ideals
held dear. The second flags up our interest in ‘higher’ forms of
culture and our love of architecture, especially historical
buildings. The sandcastle will be a ‘Crusader’ type medieval castle
conjuring up images of travel to historical destinations within our
own country and early travel experience to shared war architecture
throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
Engagement:
This project has great potential for
engagement with family groups and these are a large proportion of
the potential audience. The strong ‘fun’ aspect of this work within
the event setting is a bridge between the art and the audience.
